Research Coordinator

The Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Coordinator. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This Position reports to the Principal Investigator of the CARRA Registry.  The CARRA Registry is a North American organization working to answer critical questions about arthritis and rheumatic diseases through data capture.

The Research Coordinator position encompasses the technical, analytical and clerical functions related to CARRA Registry and other projects, including implementation, as well as the screening, enrolment and assessment of patients.

This position will be required to work out of the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Coordinate and administer research projects per established study protocols and study procedure manuals
  • Obtain informed consent, and ensuring appropriate and timely follow-up for research studies
  • Recruit and explain research to new participants
  • Responsible for ensuring complete and accurate data collection and entry of data into electronic databases in a timely fashion
  • Perform regular quality control checks on data entries
  • Train new staff and students in participant recruitment, consent and questionnaire administration
  • Collaborate with the investigative team, physicians, nurses, and clinic staff for ensuring timely implementation and completion of research activities
  • Work closely with other research team members to design and implement the UCAN Platform
  • Complete Research Ethics submissions, amendments and renewals as required for Division endorsed UCAN projects
  • Responsible for confidential research data management
  • Conduct analyses of data collected through UCAN Platform and associated projects
  • Work closely with the Primary Investigator in areas of analytics and reporting, in the development of documents for the purpose of reporting to the investigative team and the stakeholders, and manuscript preparation for publication
  • Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate reports to manager is kept informed of activities and progress of work
  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor, senior management, and with the campus community
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (required) – any of Bachelor of Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Public Health, or Sciences
  • Master’s Degree (asset) – Health sciences, Health Services Research, Epidemiology or Public Health
  • 5 years of related research experience
  • SOCRA certification required
  • A combination of education, training and experience may be considered
  • Experience administering and/or interviewing study participants
  • Previous experience of working in a health institution and working with patients will be considered an asset
  • Phlebotomy experience will be considered an asset
  • Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of research policies and procedures

Robotics and CBD Lab Facility Specialist

This position will be a key contributor to the success of the Faculty’s downtown presence. Although this position will report to the Manager, Faculty Operations, the incumbent will function highly-autonomously, applying a high degree of judgement, creativity, and problem-solving. The individual in this position will be a robotics subject-matter expert. This position will support and facilitate the research-related activities of the Faculty through the development of sophisticated tools and protocols for the use of digital fabrication, and will be responsible for the management of CBDLab equipment and lab spaces, including the development of safety procedures and protocols, ensuring that all individuals working in the robotics area have been sufficiently trained in the use of non-standard equipment such as robots, laser cutters, and large format 3D printers.
Expectation of overtime from time to time to accommodate meetings and/or events that may take place outside of normal work hours.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Digital Fabrication

  • Support independent Faculty member research into the development of tools and protocols for digital fabrication in the construction industry; specifically, digital masonry initiatives
  • Ensure all digital masonry initiatives are in accordance with defined protocols and procedures
  • Support the incorporation of robot-related research into studio courses, block week courses, and MEDes research initiatives
  • Support the incorporation of robot-related research within Design/Build projects
  • Responsible for the programming and care of the sophisticated robots

Facility Management

  • Manage CBDL equipment and lab spaces, including the development of protocols to govern usage of the sophisticated and specialized equipment in the facility
  • Under the direction of the Manager, Faculty Operations, support the strategic vision of the CBDLab
  • Support and ensure an environment conducive to work class development and research
  • Develop systems and processes to maintain and improve the efficacy of the CBDLab in all areas of activity, including technical development, operations, and research
  • Collaborate with faculty in matters requiring CBDLab expertise
  • Ensure all fire, health, safety and air quality risks and hazards are inspected and maintained at the required levels as mandated by University of Calgary Health and Safety

Training and Administration

  • Develop all required safety training and robotic training protocols for the CBDLab
  • Responsible for ensuring all applicable students and staff who use the facility and the specialized equipment within (digital fabrication / laser cutters / large format 3D printers) complete the required safety and robotic training
  • Oversee day-to-day work activities of AUPE hourly staff and/or GATs/GARs (Manager, Faculty Operations, or researcher, will be the Reports to Manager for these positions)

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Professional Degree in Architecture
  • 3-5 years experience in the area of digital fabrication
  • Training and experience in the use of Robot Arms and applicable software
  • Proven experience with Design/Build Projects
  • Proven experience in development of tools / protocols for digital fabrication
  • Experience in providing guidance and mentoring to undergraduate and graduate students in terms of working with digital fabrication, and facility safety.

Research Facilitator

This position will be a key contributor to the success of the Faculty’s research presence, and will report to the Manager, Faculty Operations. This position will support and facilitate the research-related activities of the Faculty, and encourage research alignment, connectivity, and collaboration across the Faculty. Expectation of overtime from time to time to accommodate meetings and/or events that may take place outside of normal work hours.

The incumbent will oversee multiple research-related opportunities and projects, often with overlapping deadlines and priorities. There is a high impact of error related to the scope of work. The position has frequent interactions with multiple stakeholders, including University administrators, researchers, funding bodies, administrators at other institutions, and industry partners. He / she will liaise with Legal Services to ensure University agreements resulting in successful applications abide by legal rules and regulations. The incumbent will be required to project manage application processes from the development of proposals to project set up, mitigating delays or issues with project implementation throughout the application process.

As this position frequently liaises with key stakeholders including granting agencies, government liaisons, researchers, and senior institutional administrators, the incumbent must have a polished and professional presence, and possess diplomacy, foresight, and sound judgment. Further, as this position will be expected to support the development of new research opportunities, it will be important that the individual possess creativity and the proven ability to recognize opportunities for possible research collaborations.

  • Actively work to create an inventory of potential research project funding and award programs across the Faculty (in consultation and collaboration with the Dean, and the Associate Dean, Research and Innovation)

  • Stimulate external research sponsorship and build capacity by facilitating grant application processes through provision of guidance and information to faculty members and graduate students
  • Review grant applications to ensure University and sponsor requirements have been met
  • Create and execute strategies and processes to garner a high degree of competitiveness in non-traditional funding pools
  • Oversee the review of applications for quality and compliance with granting agency regulations

Education

  • Ensure faculty members are informed in a timely manner of emerging funding opportunities, changes to programs, and deadline information

Administration / Policy

  • Maintain currency in research / awards / grants / ethics fields
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the Research Services Office, the Vice-President (Research) Office, and counterpart positions across campus to ensure the Faculty is connected with all research-related developments within the University community
  • Maintain electronic filing system of all research proposals, ethics applications, and related documents
  • Provide detailed analysis of research activity data and statistics for presentation to the Associate Dean, Research and the Dean for use in strategic planning and reporting
  • Other duties as may be required

DSM Research Assistant

This position is to design and execute the fieldwork for a research project to analyse design studio pedagogy strategies. It includes preparing the data and analysis as well as the final report and conference papers. We are looking for a researcher who can cover both the social science research methods side for the data collection and analysis side of the project as well as the education side to help further develop the Matrix as a pedagogy tool in the design studio setting. This position requires to work closely with the research team, faculty, students and the external stakeholders.

  • A keen interest in educational teaching methods and higher education learning and teaching practice is a must have
